What Could Be Causing Your Truck To Stall When Idling

Have you been having trouble keeping your truck running when it's sitting at an idle? That can be one of the most infuriating situations to deal with when you're trying to get to work or home after a long day. Here, you'll find a few things that could be causing the truck to stall and what you can do to stop it.

Water in the Fuel

When water gets mixed in with gasoline, it can cause all sorts of problems with your truck – the first problem is typically stalling or sputtering when you give it gas.

Water gets introduced into the fuel system through the process of condensation or buying bad gas at a gas station.

Head to your local auto supply store and pick up a bottle of fuel additive, or dry gas. This solution will help to balance out the levels in the fuel system and clear out any water that remains.

If you haven't run a bottle of fuel system cleaner through the truck in a while, look for a fuel additive that also cleans the injectors and lines to help resolve other issues from occurring in the future.

Clogged Fuel Filter

Fuel filters can be a real pain to change – some of them are located in the craziest places and getting to them can take an entire day to get done. Clogged fuel filters will cause the truck to hesitate, stall, prevent it from starting and failing performance.

If you have experience working with trucks, you can probably find a DIY video to show you how to replace the filter on your particular truck. If not, it's probably best to take it to your local mechanic to have it taken care of for you.

Failing Oxygen (O2) Sensor

When an oxygen sensor fails, the truck will probably run OK before it warms up, but once you've been driving a little while, the problems may begin. More often than not, the check engine light will come on when an O2 sensor fails. If your check engine light is on, head to a automotive parts store or your local mechanic to have a computer reading done to find out what codes are present. Those codes can help you find the exact cause of the stalling.
